HUNDREDS
OF CITY FOLK TAKE PART IN KL RIDE

KUALA
LUMPUR – The KL Ride 2010, an activity organised in
conjunction with this year’s edition of the prestigious
Le Tour de Langkawi and Federal Territory day, was participated
by hundreds of city folk of all ages here today.
The
ride is jointly organised by Sport Ministry and Kuala Lumpur
City Hall, Host Venue for stage 7 in Le Tour de Langkawi 2010.
Dato’
Mohid b Mohamed, Deputy Chief Secretary of Operation Youth
and Sport Ministry, flagged off the KL Ride from the Dataran
Merdeka at 8.30am this morning. Hj Abu Samah, President of
Malaysian National Cycling Federation and Mohamed B Salleh,
Chief Executive Officer were also in attendance today.
At
today’s KL Ride, participants started arriving as early
as 7am. Despite the time, there was an air of excitement as
the riders prepared for the start of the unique event. Early-birds
received FREE T-shirt along with other goodies. The ride covered
a distance of 13 kilometres and took the riders through the
heart of the nation’s capital.
Escorted
by police outriders, hundreds of cyclists start from the Sultan
Abdul Samad and made two loops around the city at 6.5 kilometres
each, through Jalan Tun Perak, Jalan Raja Chulan, Jalan Ramlee,
Jalan Ampang, Jalan Sultan Ismail and arrived back at Dataran
Merdeka. Apart from the KL Ride, other activities staged in
conjunction with Federal Territory day event was also organised
at the same venue.
“It
was great to see so many Malaysians of all ages taking the
time to participate in this ride. The response has been overwhelming.
I would like to thank all of those who supported the ride
today,” said Dato’ Mohid. The KL Ride was organised
with the main objective of promoting a healthy way of life.
There are no winners for this ride. “We hope to see
more people taking the sport of cycling,” he added.
The
KL Ride is also part of the Youth and Sport Ministry and Kuala
Lumpur City Hall’s efforts to create more awareness
and promote Le Tour de Langkawi.
The
15th edition of the UCI (Hors Category) stage race will take
place from Kota Bharu - Kuala Berang (174.5km); Kuala Terengganu
- Chukai (182.3km); Pekan - Mersing (145.6km); Mersin-Parit
Sulong (163.5km); Muar - Port Dickson (116.9km) Putrajaya
- Genting Highlands (102.8km) and Kuala Kubu Baru - Dataran
Merdeka (133.7km), covering a total distance of 1019.3km.
A
total of 120 riders from 20 teams including two local teams
are expected to take part in the event, Le Tour de Langkawi
2010.
